A. When hosting wordpress on your own website you can install plugins that allow you to use google adsense. Wordpress hosting allows you to use your own themes and plugins. Wordpress.org does not.

So I manage a lot of blogs, and decided to start looking into Wordpress MU Hosting. First of all, I have to say like other designers, and bloggers out there, I don’t recommend a product I haven’t tried myself. I installed wordpress MU this weekend and ported some blogs I haven’t really maintained yet, as well as all my themes and plugins. I have to say it was easy with a few instructions from a few forums I was able to install it in under an hour.

Download wordpress mu and ftp to your server preferably the /public_html/ folder, be sure to set wordpress MU for subdomains not folders, as you cannot change this later. Remove the Cpanel .htaccess file as one will be created by wordpress MU.

Here are some instructions for after you install wordpress MU for your primary domains.

You need to set up Wildcard DNS for Subdomains on Cpanel, wordpress mu works by referencing subdomains in the database not the file structure.

For example:

* keyword.yourdomain.com
* keyword2.yourdomain.com
* keyword3.yourdomain.com

Step 1

You must have access to “Edit DNS Zone” on your server WHM or Cpanel. This option is listed under DNS Functions.This is usally performed by the server admin, or the hosting company.

• Click “Edit DNS Zone”
• You should have a list of your domains. Select the domain you wish to use/edit. Be sure not to edit any of these, but as noted!
• Scroll down till you see “Add New Entries Below this Line”
• You’ll need to put an * in the first box, followed by adding your server IP address in place of “65.66.67.68″ . Your IP address should be in one of the other entries in this screen where you can easily copy/paste it.

Step 2

Connect to your server via SSH.

* login as: username
* password: password
* enter: cd /etc/httpd/conf/
* enter: pico httpd.conf
* press: ctrl w
* enter: youdomain.com
What you are going to do here, is edit the line that looks like:

ServerAlias yourdomain.com

to:
ServerAlias: *.yourdomain.com yourdomain.com
Save this file, and exit

Step 3
restart apache.

Step 4.

Now you can add new accounts to your wordpress MU.

Great tutorial how to setup apache php mysql

Open folder in finder, click get info for the top level folder. Click unlock at the bottom of the info pane (if its locked) Under shareing and permissions you can view all the permissions for the folder. You will see a minus and plus sign and then a gear (settings) icon, click this icon. Click “Apply to enclosed items”. This helped solve my web browser issue for sub folders.
